VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteering would involve getting to and from the
scheduled walk locations (see Walk Schedule part of this web site),
providing your own sleeping bag, mattress or cot, and appropriate
clothing. We will have a communal sleeping tent with partitions for
privacy, but you may wish to bring your own tent. The Walk will provide
all of your food during the time you are with us (except for Sunday
lunches and dinners) and will provide your transportation during the
walk.
What does volunteering involve?
1. Cooking: We will need people to cook,
primarily breakfast and set out lunch materials for the walkers to make
their own lunches. There will be many days when we will need to cook
dinner also. These duties will require you to arise at 5:00 am, to
prepare the food prescribed on the menu, to clean the pots and pans and
make sure the dishes are clean, to pack them into containers, to pack up
the food in containers, to pack the coolers, fold up tables and chairs,
pack the stoves, then to move the containers to the truck.
2. Drivers: We will need to move two pickup trucks, two portable
toilets on trailers, a 16 ft. flatbed trailer, a panel truck. and 2
campers. Driving is not extensive because the most we will move each day
is about twenty miles. However, we will need to move our whole camp
almost every day and there will be errands which will need to be run
each day also.
3. Roustabouts: (for want of a better term) We will need at least
2 people each time we move the camp who are in good condition and fairly
strong. They will move the heavy equipment, set up the cook tent and the
staff sleeping tent, unload the staff and walkers' bags and tents, set
up and break down tables and chairs, and stabilize the flatbed trailer
and toilet trailers.
4. Registration: Each day we will set up a registration table
which will need to be manned. This person will take in registration
forms, handle the registration money (in a prescribed manner), make sure
liability waivers are signed, make sure walkers know about logistical
and safety issues, pass out T-Shirts and The Walk water bottles. This
person will not need physical strength but will need to be withstand
some stress if there is a rush on registration, and being responsible
for the money taken in may also be stressful.
5. Walk Marshals: Marshals will not be needed all the time, but
there will be cases where street crossings are dangerous or there is
very little walking room adjacent to the highway. In these cases we will
need people who can help the walkers stay safe and alert vehicle drivers
to the walkers. Marshals will have specific training so they do not
break any laws or place themselves or walkers in danger.
Some of the above jobs can be combined so that we will
not need more than six (6) volunteers on any one day. Please indicate
your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices for dates. If you wish to volunteer more
than once that will be wonderful.
Finally we are still looking for some people to be
in charge of some specific tasks:
Medical and Health: We need a person who will
research medical facilities all along the route, will oversee a medical
program for everyone on The Walk, will create two extensive medical kits
for permanent storage in our vehicles.
Communications: We need a person who will be responsible for
securing "inter-walk" commuicating equipment, and who will be
responsible for securing a loud speaker system that can be transported
and used to address events.
Cooking Coordinator: This person would be responsible for
creating menues for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that will be healthy,
tasty, easy to prepare, easy to clean up, and be fairly easy on our
budget. In addition, the person will examine our equipment for
appropriateness and completeness.
