How to use the Congregational Toolkit
Toolkit
All items in the toolkit are meant to be tailored to
your interests and your congregation. If you download the documents, you
can cut and paste at will. Be sure to edit the spots where you need to
fill in specific information (e.g. contact info of your coordinator).
Bulletin Announcements
1) The half-page insert explains the purpose of the
walk and tells of the opportunity to join a Walk team. Pay attention to
where specific information needs to go – coordinator’s name, phone #,
date and place of Walk. If a Walk team has not been formed, use the
bulletin to invite someone to take up the challenge of forming one.
2) The series of short announcements is meant to reinforce the Walk in
various stages, each announcement giving a little more information than
the previous. Use your own discretion as to how you want to use these
announcements for your purposes.
Walk Teams
1) If interested in forming a Walk team, add a
friend’s name (someone you know is already interested) and yours to the
sign-up sheet first. Then display the sheet on a clipboard on a table in
the Fellowship Hall or pass around at church meetings and small groups.
Announce that it is there at the beginning of a service and in the
bulletin. [Remember: It is easier for people to sign up for something
when they see others are, too.]
2) Use the sign-up sheet to send reminders about the Walk. Make sure
everyone on your Walk team is registered with HJ! to walk.
3) Think of clever ways your Walk team can stand out, e.g. bandanas,
same hats, silly sunglasses, etc. Not required, but a fun way to
identify as a team!
Housing Justice! Sunday – June 6
1) HJ! Sunday is meant to be a day when congregations
across Colorado talk about affordable housing. It is the kick-off of the
Walk and we hope pastors and other religious leaders will talk about
affordable housing in their sermons.
2) We would also ask, if your congregation deemed it appropriate, that
30% of the offering be given towards HJ!. Thirty-percent is the highest
percentage of one’s income considered affordable when directed towards
housing costs.
3) You may consider involving your congregation’s Drama Group (if you
have one) in writing a skit to make the struggle to afford housing that
much more powerful.
4) You may also consider using a
litany that Housing Justice! has
available.
Can’t walk?
There may be those who cannot or do not want to walk
5K. Don’t fret - we still want your participation! Consider staffing
water stations, helping register walkers, helping with voter
registration, driving support vehicles, bringing a potluck, or being a
cheerleader alongside the Community Walk. Be creative! There are many
ways you can be involved without physically walking. There are lines on
the Walk team registration form for people to say they want to help if
they can’t walk. Contact Housing Justice! to put you in touch with your
local community’s organizer. You can also go online to the People’s Walk
website and fill out a volunteer form under “How You Can Help.” |
