We are declaring June 6, 2004, to be
Housing Justice! Sunday in as many faith communities in Colorado as will
participate. This is the day the People's Walk begins its trek
around the state and also the day we hope faith communities will make
the conscious effort to address affordable housing issues during their
worship services. For your
convenience, we have created a litany (download
by clicking here) that you can incorporate into your
worship service as it fits your worship style. It includes an
opening prayer, a call and response prayer, a concluding confessional
prayer, and a benediction. Furthermore, this is a link to New York City's
Housing First! Faith in Action Materials web page,
which gives sermon ideas and interfaith texts fitting to housing.
Feel free to glean ideas from them, because they too have created a
faith day for housing which they call their Housing Sabbath.
In accordance to HUD's ruling that in order to be
"affordable," housing should cost no more than 30% of one's income, we
are asking that congregations consider giving 30% of that week's
offering to further the mission of Housing Justice!. Please only
do this if your congregation deems the offering donation appropriate and
allocable.
